As noted in books like Marshall Goldsmith’s What Got You Here Won’t Get You There, what makes many leaders successful middle managers do not always translate into executive roles. The risk of promoting a leader who is not right for the role (or just not ready yet) can have a sizable impact on the business. The best companies build strategies to identify future executives and develop them, both before they transition and once they assume the role.

This session will discuss different strategies companies have used in their approach to preparing leaders for executive roles, including traditional assessments, structured assessment centers, executive coaching programs, and integrated executive education. The session will be interactive, and participants will be asked to share what their companies are doing to identify and develop their future executives. Learning outcomes include:

  • Identifying executive competencies
  • Assessing potential executives for potential
  • Strategies for developing executives





Rik Nemanick, principal consultant and co-founder of The Leadership Effect

The session will be led by Rik Nemanick, principal consultant and co-founder of The Leadership Effect. Rik will share his experience designing and delivering executive development at companies like Monsanto, Belden, Boston College, and Bunzl Distribution. In addition to his consulting, Rik is also a lecturer for Olin Executive Education at Washington University and is the author of the book The Mentor’s Way.


Mr. John G. Lyday, Senior Vice  President, Chief Human Resources Officer - Bunzl Distribution

Mr. Lyday leads the Human Resources function for Bunzl Distribution, a $7+ billion distribution leader with employees in the United States, Canada and Mexico. He and his team are focused on aligning talent and workforce strategies with Bunzl business strategies. Previous, Lyday has held positions of increasing responsibility in human resources for May Department Stores and Monsanto Company.

Mr. Lyday is a graduate of the Pennsylvania State University in Spanish linguistics and has a Masters in International Business from Saint Louis University. Lyday is an active supporter of the Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis and has served on the Board of Directors for over nine years. He also serves on boards with the Midwest Health Initiative and the Boeing Institute of International Business.
